Short Term, Yes. But I still think there will be a great rally in gold mining shares at the outset of 2002. I'm still long HM and ABX here-even though I bought ABX puts on Friday to hedge my position and shorted NEM above $20. I'm more hedged here, practically speaking, than bearish. I'm still waiting for the XAU to tell me early next week which way she wants to go.

My gut feel here is that many currency traders covered their shorts ahead of the G7 meeting this weekend. I'd have no problem if the XAU and POG resolved itself bullishly here. I just think the odds of it happening are slim.
