Congressman Condit's brother detained in Broward County

FORT LAUDERDALE -- The younger brother of U.S. Rep. Gary Condit was arrested before dawn Saturday as he tried to check into a motel on charges that he violated his probation, authorities said.
Darrell Wayne Condit was being held on a violation of probation warrant for a past DUI case in Monroe County. He is the brother of the Democratic congressman from California, said Veda Coleman-Wright, a spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff's Office. Darrell Condit was taken into custody at 3:30 a.m. as he was checking into a Dania Beach hotel. An off-duty deputy recognized Condit's van as he pulled into the parking lot of the Red Carpet Inn, Coleman-Wright said.
Investigators at the sheriff's office in Fort Lauderdale questioned Condit for about four hours Saturday morning, said sheriff's spokeswoman Cheryl Stopnick.
Stopnick said Condit would be moved to Broward County Jail and likely arraigned Sunday, before ultimately being transferred to Monroe County officials.
Condit, 49, was last arrested in Florida in November 1996 and charged with driving with a suspended license, driving under the influence of alcohol and possession of marijuana, Monroe County Sheriff's officials said.
The Modesto Bee of California reported Monday that Darrell Condit is Gary Condit's brother, and that Darrell Condit "had an outstanding warrant in Florida for driving under the influence" in 1998.
Herrin said she did not know how Condit violated his probation, or what conviction brought his probation.
"Between 1994 and 1996, we saw him as a regular visitor to our detention facility," Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin told The Associated Press. "After 1996, we didn't have any contact with him at all."
Records show that Darrell Condit did live in Key West during the mid-1990s.
When asked if Darrell Condit can be considered a fugitive, Herrin responded: "He does have an outstanding warrant."
A Darrell Condit also was listed as a Monroe County fugitive on Florida Department of Law Enforcement's Web site.
Gary Condit has been the focus of media scrutiny since Chandra Levy, a former intern at the Bureau of Prisons, was reported missing in early May. While the congressman has made no public comment on his relationship with Levy, police in Washington have said he admitted having an affair with Levy.
Police have repeatedly said that Gary Condit is not a suspect in Levy's disappearance, which still is classified as a missing-person case.
