>> But the economy is being de-centralized and "westernized," <<

true

>> yet the govt remains pretty heavily centralized and dictatorial, no? <<

isn't part of being a dictator telling people they can't own their own business? isn't being a dictator telling people they can't own their own land? isn't being a dictator confiscating a significant portion of people's earnings via taxation? you want an example of a dictatorship look no further than our own country! more than half of the money you earn is confiscated from you and distributed to others who did nothing to earn it. that is communism if you ask me! telling me i can't hold a cell-phone while i drive my car is a dictatorship to me!

like i've said before, what would you have the chinese leaders do? have the entire communist party resign and hold democratic elections next week? there would be a free-for-all and chaos like in russia. the ccp realizes that as they give the people more economic freedom, they are relegating themselves and their party to a diminishing role of power. eventually they will hold free elections like taiwan did recently.

you just can't change from one economic system to another overnight. you don't see major political uprisings like tiananmen square anymore because the people recognize the progress that is being made. tiananmen square may have been a wake up call to chinese leaders that they needed to respond to the desire for change from the young vibrant chinese population. as long as the leaders of the communist party continue to show that they are interested in raising the standard of living for the average chinese person, i think the masses will remain relatively content as the shift takes place.
