Hi BWAC,

So it becomes a merger of equals to even a greater degree. It looks like two large companies with the same great plan.

Makes the concept of a merger of equals fit even better. If you wanted size to bring about economies of scale in your production arena. It would become reality much faster with a horde of cash. The cash would fund the R&D.If times were to get slow the R&D could enable a catch up with Amat.

One underlying development that neither Nvls or Lam can compete with Amat, is Amat's new approach towards modular tool sets.In a world where Nvls's copper tools were the best or Lam's tools were the best. Neither would be allowed, if Amat's combined modular tool sets wouldn't be compatible.

This is a recent development and with new fab floor space going at a premium combining station and reduceing the equipments footprint is a big savings.Additionally the automatic movement of pods or smif's from station to station is big bucks as well - reducing the number of stops saves big money as well.

Modular tools do make sense. To compete against Amat,Novellus may well see the writing on the wall(Lam also).I would imagine it would be much easier to sell a modular tool set made by the same company vs getting one company to coordinate their efforts with another.

I can only imagine the headache writing the software would be - let alone making them interface together.

The concept works from my far off position.
