Monte Carlo is a random method for simulation where you figure out things by throwing random points at it. If I wanted to tell how big a thing was and I could not look at it, I could probe an area where it might be randomly and test to see if each of the random pokings produced a hit or a miss. The ratio of hits to misses converges on the area/volume of the thing. It's a neat technique.
