Buffett's point was not that no companies have made money but that the industry as a whole hasn't returned a damn thing.

hasn't returned a damn thing? Buy LUV stock over 80 months ago and you'd be up 486%. Not to shabby in my opinion. Although i'll agree that airline companies don't offer the qualities Buffett usually looks for in stocks (high margins, low cost to run biz, a franchises, huge moat, ect..)

I'll agree that the airline industry as a whole probably performed pretty bad? But how has the operating system industry done as a whole during the 70s, 80s, & 90s? Probably pretty terrible considering everyone lost expect Microsoft.
