I don't think that there is anyone on SI who has been more near-maniacally bent on Ethernet than I have been for the past four years. Yet, your posting that last message to me would suggest to lurkers that I am pitting myself against Ethernet. Is it that you don't understand my position yet?

I don't recall asking those things, although I can identify bits and pieces from this statement (it is a statement, isn't it?) that relate to some of the issues we've been discussing. Let's break it down:
::AHhaha : FAC
::You asked what was at issue with ethernet
: I don't understand that clause, and I don't recall asking the question.
:: or why EPON is far away.
: The standards that will be used to define EPON networks are still in development. I know that you don't like standards activities, unless it suits your needs (witness the GMPLS excerpt you sent me earlier), but without them we will not likely see an EPON that is reproducible, or one whose components can be made cost effectively enough to satisfy mass deployments.
:: or why ethernet developers aren't 6 months from extinction
: Here you are referring to the projected early demise of some of the Ethernet integrators that someone commented on and that Nolle agreed with, as did I. There are already cemetary plots filled with BLEC integrators [some of them ex-associates] and so called next gen optical networking resellers who were promoting Ethernet sales to their tenants... who have gone the metro Ethernet route [[let's put it this way: they were planning to go the metro Ethernet route] but who have also already failed. Others are holding on by a thread, clutching their business plans while cutting costs wherever they can, hoping that their projections will at least partially hold up until the downturn reverses. Others, still, may go on to prosper (none of them are yet), but not before they prove that what they have to offer has value and that they are sustainable, over a longer time frame.
:: or why SDM in the ECI might be leveraged into big
: what do you mean by leveraged into "big." Is it your contention that SDM - as defined by Actelis - was designed to satisfy residential users needs? Or, SOHO? Where?
:: or why standards building can hurt more than help
: I neither asked nor stated this. You raised some issues about the worthlessness of some standards initiatives, if I recall. |
