Reg- Lead times in microprocessor design is three to four years so the cake is already in the oven. My own analysis is Athlon design has greater potential than P-4 and AMD X86-64 specs are superior to Itanium. Like Rambus, Itanium is too drastic a change and Intel may end up adding a P-III core onto the chip to overcome compatibility issues.

As far as software goes, I'm not quite sure what you are trying to accomplish. Following the conventional wisdom is prudent but once again my gut feeling is there will be technologies out there that will produce better results than .Net.

The key is ease of developing applications:

Developers just want to code the business problem and aren't interested in becoming systems engineers;
