Shock As PETA Urges People To Eat Whale Meat

The animal rights group which attacked Mayor Ken Livingstone in the US triggered fresh outrage today by urging the public to eat whale meat.

Members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals claimed they would prefer to see whales consumed if it means fewer factory-farmed animals being killed.

Ministers from around the world meet in London today for the 23rd International Whaling Commission. On the table are proposals to bring back legal commercial whaling. Iceland, Norway and Japan are threateningto defy international objections and resume commercial whaling, arguing there are plentiful supplies. The sale of whale meat is illegal in Britain, but it is available in Iceland from the last stocks frozen 13 to 14 years ago.

Peta's vegan campaign coordinator Bruce Freidrich, who threw water at Mr Livingstone in Washington in January over his plan to clear pigeons from Trafalgar Square, urged people to ditch "chicken nuggets and haddock fillets in favour of whale whoppers", adding: "If you're not vegetarian, you are responsible for far more suffering and deaths than one Japanese or Norwegian whaler."

But Sue Fisher, campaigns manager with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, said: "How anyone can suggest that what happens to whales is not cruel is beyond me. They go through the most barbaric treatment."

RSPCA spokeswoman Sue Nutbrown said it was wrong to compare the rearing of livestock with the hunting of a wild animal, as both processes include great potential for suffering.
