Soybeans Rise on Speculative Rally
biz.yahoo.com

CHICAGO (AP) -- A late-session rally pushed soybean prices sharply higher Monday on the Chicago Board of Trade. Grains finished fractionally higher.

A soybean-buying frenzy shortly before the closing bell was driven by speculation linked to the weekly crop progress report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Prospects for another hot spell during the critical pod-setting season also helped the market outlook. Corn prices settled little-changed. Pressure from forecasts for wetter, cooler weather in the Midwest was offset by talk that weekend rains were not enough to eliminate crop problems. Wheat futures drooped on weak export activity before bouncing back on the rally in soybeans.

Wheat for September delivery rose 1/4 cent to $2.83 1/2 a bushel; December corn rose 1/4 cent to $2.20 3/4 a bushel; December oats rose 7 1/2 cents to $1.36 a bushel; November soybeans rose 11 1/4 cents to $4.97 1/2 a bushel. Beef futures advanced while pork futures retreated on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. August live cattle rose .42 cent to 74.62 cents a pound; August feeder cattle rose .32 cent to 90.47 cents a pound; August lean hogs fell .78 cent to 67.47 cents a pound; August frozen pork bellies fell .88 cent to 92.12 cents a pound.
