Thomas--

Thanks for bringing your expertise to bear on BEA's market and app server technology generally. For some of us, understanding the technology still qualifies as heavy lifting. :)

didn't list Tuxedo as a product...any information on BEA revenues by product line
Unfortunately product line sales are as hard to get at as market share. In annual reports BEA classifies products by generic function (e.g., E-Commerce Server Products or E-Commerce Integration Products). The only place Tuxedo actually appears in the latest annual report or 10K is in the risk section where BEA points out that its revenues depend heavily on Tuxedo and WebLogic sales.

"enhancements" integrated into WebLogic
This phrasing was misleading. The enhancements are not "proprietary extensions" although they are both proprietary and extensions. They are made available as options in the form of JavaBeans, which fully comply with J2EE standards.

cautions...about the youth of the market
Thanks for the heads-up on iPlanet. To some extent, what constitutes a tornado or a gorilla will always have shadings of difference depending on who is drawing the distinctions. There is a subliminal pressure to find a "gorilla" behind any Hunt. Coming up empty handed or with a maybe is rather like going on a quest and not discovering the grail, just some clues.

But it would hold us in good stead, I think, to remember Mike's constant refrain: Even though you cannot have a gorilla without first having a tornado, not every tornado, proto-tornado, or hurricane spawns a gorilla.
