You have described potentially many groups of people. Certainly many religious people but also today just as many other groups such as environmentalists. Body builders who become obsessed with size and take massive amounts of steroids etc. Mostly the fanatic becomes part of a group and sublimates his individual worth to the greater cause. It is in this sublimation that the danger of exploitation takes place. TO question authority becomes discouraged and rational thinking is obscured of outright forbidden. This is how a Hitler can rise to power. Sitting back in a detached manner I see no difference between a religious fanatic or an environmental fanatic. I value religion and I value the environment but both of the above scare me.
