Chip Exports Expected to Tumble Below US$1 Bln. in July
July 24, 2001 (SEOUL) -- Exports of semiconductors are expected to fall below US$1 billion in July, casting a dark cloud on Korea's export figures.

With Hynix Semiconductor Inc. announcing it saw a 34-percent fall in sales during the second quarter, and losses amounting to 266 billion won, other chipmakers in the United States, Japan and the Asian region are moving to cut production and facilities investments.

NEC Corp., Fujitsu Ltd. and other Japanese semiconductor manufacturers said they will cut back investments by 550 billion yen until the end of 2002.

Cuts in production can be attributed to sluggish sales of wireless handsets, PCs and network devices, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy said exports are expected to be approximately US$970 million in July, down by 40 percent from last year figure.
