Re: VOD over HFC

Ray, Frank, and Jim- VOD is here and now. I have it. It may not be deployed in mass now for either one of two reasons. One is the anti-technology MPAA(which limits content). The other is bandwidth capabilities of the HFC network. I'm not sure what the real problem is. But it is rolling out. No doubt about that.

Video over IP is never going to happen. I should say video over IP to the TV set is never going to happen. No one wants that to happen (MSOs or MPAA). Never is too long. I should say, not going to happen in within the next 20 years. The entrenched equipment needs to be milked for all it's worth pretty much like twisted copper. Only recently have MSOs converted to digital TV and I'm under the assumption it has nothing to do with IP.

Keep in mind the driver for VOD is simply. Increase revenues of the MSOs from a saturated subscriber base. If there was halfway decent content, they would be getting me for about $10/month extra. If you add, digital TV(a pre-requisite for VOD), cable modem, and local phone, you are talking over a 100% increase in revenues for a fixed subscriber base. Right now the BIG push is digital TV(extra $12/month). IMO the others revenue generators will follow. But key question is how long?

I was taken by surprise when SFA took it's recent hit. It plays right into digital TV space. And digital TV is first in line for revenue generation. I don't know much details of what happened and still need to look into warning. -MikeM(From Florida)
