Collaboration Between Silicon Wave and Digianswer Software From Motorola to Deliver Bluetooth Solution
Posted: 7/24/2001 @ 8:26 AM

Silicon Wave Inc., a designer and provider of RF communication system components, and Digianswer A/S, a subsidiary of Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT), the industry leader in Bluetooth(TM) qualified parts and components, today announced that Silicon Wave will combine both companies' Bluetooth Specification Version 1.1 qualified products to provide a comprehensive solution for adding Bluetooth wireless connectivity to PC products.

Through this relationship, Silicon Wave intends to enable notebooks, PC cards and USB adapters to be designed with proven hardware and software that is already Bluetooth Specification Version 1.1 qualified, thereby significantly reducing OEM development time while offering a seamless integration path.

Silicon Wave will use the Digianswer Bluetooth Software Suite with its Bluetooth Specification Version 1.1 qualified SiW1502(TM) Radio Modem and SiW1602(TM) Baseband ICs to provide a solution that integrates seamlessly, enabling OEMs to manufacture products for the PC market with proven Bluetooth hardware and software that drastically reduces product development time and accelerates time-to-market.

The Digianswer Bluetooth Software Suite (BTSWS) enables Microsoft's Windows operating system with Bluetooth capabilities. The solution, which has been shipping since August 2000, has been called the de-facto standard by industry experts. The BTSWS is compliant to the Bluetooth Specification Version 1.1 and contains the Bluetooth protocol stack (above HCI), the Bluetooth profiles and an extensive User Interface. The User Interface is highly integrated into the Windows operating system allowing a high level of usability when using Bluetooth on the Windows operating system. The BTSWS is supported by a comprehensive SDK (Software Developers Kit) and PDK (Protocol Development Kit) (both to be found at www.btsws.com) that are designed to enable third parties to develop new applications, protocols and profiles.

"According to Cahners In-Stat, annual shipments of notebooks and desktop PCs incorporating Bluetooth wireless capability are expected to exceed 140 million units in 2005," said Jarvis Tou, vice president of marketing and business development for Silicon Wave. "The collaboration between Silicon Wave and Motorola, through its Digianswer subsidiary, two leaders in the development of Bluetooth wireless technology solutions, provides advanced Bluetooth capabilities targeted to these applications."

"This agreement is expected to help accelerate the deployment of Bluetooth wireless technology and drive ease of integration and interoperability, which is key to insuring that Bluetooth products perform to meet consumer expectations," said Bill Dunnigan, vice president and general manager of Motorola's Wireless and Broadband Group. "Through our advanced user interface in the Software Suite and the rest of the products in our broad portfolio of Bluetooth solutions, we're focused on creating solutions that are easy to deploy and use."
