Kibo, for a nice combination of technically practical but technologically off-the-wall in your telecommunications, I think it's hard to beat meteor-burst communications. There is an intriguing body of published research, analysis, and field results. I handled some joint venture proposals for a commercial deployment in a developing country several years ago, and I was totally intrigued by what could be accomplished at such low cost. It is hard to support more than about telex speed (50b/s), and there can be some "latency" -- waiting for a meteor to bounce your signal off of -- but the space segment is certainly priced right. That may end up just a technology for spies and footnotes, though, with the coming proliferation of satellite constellations looking for traffic.

The remote islands that had only short wave and the mail boat for communications were a target market for meteor burst communications; now it looks like multi-billion dollar satellite systems will nudge out their lower-tech contender in even those markets.
