Kulicke & Soffa posts loss

WILLOW GROVE, Pa., July 24 (Reuters) - Kulicke & Soffa (NasdaqNM:KLIC - news), which makes equipment used to make microchips, on Tuesday posted a fiscal third-quarter loss vs. a profit a year earlier, hurt by a slump in capital spending by chipmakers.

In the quarter ended June 30, the company lost $9.5 million, or 19 a share, compared with a profit of $38.2 million, or 67 cents a share, a year ago. Excluding the amortization of goodwill and intangibles, the loss in the latest quarter was $5.0 million, or 10 cents per share.

Analysts on average had expected Kulicke & Soffa to lose 18 cents a share, according to research firm Thomson Financial/First Call.

The company said third-quarter sales fell 51 percent to $130.9 million. It said its ``best guess'' for fourth-quarter revenues was a range of $90 million to $105 million.

Shares of Kulicke & Soffa closed on Monday at $16.15 on Nasdaq, having fallen over the past year from as high as $25.25.
