RESEARCH ALERT-Varian Semiconductor estimates cut
NEW YORK, July 25 (Reuters) - Credit Suisse First Boston on Wednesday said it cut its earnings estimates on Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates Inc. (NasdaqNM:VSEA - news) after the maker of tools used in the production of microchips warned on its fourth-quarter earnings outlook.

Credit Suisse First Boston analyst John Pitzer said in a research note that he cut his estimate on fiscal year 2001 to $1.62 per share from $1.84 and on fiscal year 2002 to a loss of 20 cents from a profit of 85 cents a share.

Pitzer said his revised estimates reflect his cautionary stance given structural overcapacity, end market demand issues, and exposure to Asia and memory markets.

Shares of Varian were off $1.55, or 4.9 percent, at $30.10 on Nasdaq in morning trade.
