RE: Front-end/Back-End Order Divergence: Reason for Optimism?

CNBC yesterday cited a report (perhaps CEUT that you mentioned) which noted that front-end orders were up 2% last month (2nd consecutive rise) while back-end orders declined 19% (13th consecutive fall).

What is the significance of this data? I did not notice that front-end companies like AMAT, KLAC or NVLS got any bounce from it? Can front-end equipment orders reasonably be construed as a leading indicator of overall chip-equipment orders, or at least a somewhat more sensitive barometer of industry activity?
