Via is scrambling hard to try to launch same time as the i845. Their window of opportunity is small, but they are persistent, and they have DDR support.

VIA will start to ship it's P4 DDR chipset VIA P4X266 DDR to Taiwanese manufacturers despite licensing issues are being discussed. As Intel will not launch DDR version of it's 845 chipset until Q1 2002, VIA has prepared 30,000 P4X266 chipset for the manufacturers. VIA also undercut Intel's 845 chipset pricing by 25-35%.


Tiny insignificant volume of 30K, but big floods start with tiny trickles. FWIW, I agree with you that the i845 will likely cut via sales significantly, but as long as intel doesn't allow the DDR support on the i845 to be enabled, the P4X266 has a chance...
