I AM concerned. That is why I spent so much time digging through the financials! The most frustrating part for me is the lack of good data on the health of these businesses.

I think (NOT based on any precise analysis)that Intel has a good chance at turning the Strongarm/Xsacle stuff into a success in a big way. I think it has a fair shot at something similar with the network processors and maybe with some of the the Ethernet business. If they succeed in both, Barrett will be a hero. If they succeed in one, things will be ok.

I think Intel is wasting their time and our money in some of the new businesses such as Intel online and perhaps some businesses building high-end networking devices (such as routers, switches, accelerators etc.). But again, I have no real insight into any of this and even less data to go by.

I am not yet ready to call this attempt at diversification a failure but I am getting increasingly concerned. This is not the first time that a US corporation has wasted a lot of time, money and effort trying to build an empire by diversification into businesses where they have no core competence.

Actually, I have always thought that Intel management is very solid. The metrics Barrett outlined at the shareholder meeting for deciding when to exit businesses sound fine. I just hope they apply these rigorously and systematically exit businesses they need to in a timely fashion. In the meantime, I wish I had more data on these other businesses.
