Stanford University, which has an $8.6 billion endowment, is
encouraging its students to go on welfare. As a cost-cutting
measure, the university is canceling its HMO contracts; it
expects the cost of medical insurance for dependents will go
up by as much as 60%. A flier, which Stanford's student
health center distributed with a letter announcing the
change, notes that one option for students who can't afford
the new health plan is Medi-Cal, California's version of the
Medicaid program, which provides health care for the
indigent.
