ALA CEO comments on ALA Optics sales..

Revenue of EURO 2,115 million for the Optics segment was up 22.8% from EURO 1,723
a year earlier. On a sequential basis, sales advanced by 18.7%. Terrestrial optical
networking sales were poor in the U.S. but strong in continental Europe, Latin America
and Asia Pacific, and were driven by ADM/SDH and DWDM products as incumbent
operators continued to upgrade their networks. Optical fiber sales posted double-digit
sales growth and were driven by sustained demand in Europe. Sales of cross connects
were satisfactory in Europe and China but slow in the United States. Sales in submarine
networking were significantly down year-on-year due to deferrals caused by contract
delivery delays.

Income from operations of EURO 208 million compared to EURO 253 million in the
second quarter of 2000, representing a year-on-year decline of 17.8%. The decrease is
almost exclusively attributable to lower submarine sales, which in turn led to lower
profitability for that activity. Income from operations in optical fiber and terrestrial
networking both posted strong increases.
