Just a quick comment after the conf. call. Based on many comments from the various boards, many will be pleasantly surprised, that a central mission for WSTL's board going forward, is to run WSTL for profitability.
Secondly the company wide focus is now to provide equipment that meets the need for broadband solutions in general, at the edge. So the company is evaluating the relavence of its parts, in terms of these two agendas, profitability, and the focus of co.'s broadband mission.
Earlier in the conf. call the CEO seemed to indicate the existence or development of new product that will capitalize on the broadband solutions theme, but he didn't elaborate, in part for competitive reasons. Later in the call the head engineer mentioned different new products, but I was unclear about the details. Those that are more familiar WSTL's product line, may have some thoughts.
All in all, given the overall circumstance, I think the Board, all at WSTL and the new CEO should be given credit, for their efforts so far. Redefining themselves as a overall Broadband solutions company at the edge, was key. As was said in the call, they wanted to avoid being pigeon holed in one area of the broadband build out, at the edge.
If WSTL could continue to build accretive alliances with co.s with various capabilities, in terms of broadband solutions at the edge, they could form a group that could be the one stop solution for customers needs, whether wired or wireless broadband.
Take a customer like Verizon, if Verizon ultimately provides wired and wireless broad band, will Verizon care if a customer bounces from one system to another, no because they will make money either way. Thus there is an incentive to provide a total bundled package to the customer at the edge and let them bounce their usage around, from wired to wireless. If a WSTL alliance group can help set up a single integrated wired to wireless broadband system up for a Verizon, we may have something. |
