Neo, think of it in terms of supply and demand curves. The tax lowers demand for labor at any particular pre-tax price. When you lower demand then you also lower the price unless supply is extremely inelastic. The net is only the market price because there is a new market price but it may be noticeably different from what the market price would be if there was no tax.

If taxes are part of the duty of citizenship, they cannot merely be theft.

The problem I have with the ideas about duties of citizenship and the "social contract" was that I never signed any such contract. If someone takes money from you by force or threat of force then it is theft or extortion. Unfortunately in this case it seems to be necessary extortion or at least it is better then the alternative which is anarchy.
