the major selling point of 386 over 286 was for years the power of virtual 86 and virtual 286 modes. What comparable utility does x86-64 offer? The "power of virtual 86" & 286 modes was legacy compatibility. x86-64 offers the same legacy compatibility, plus you get 64-bit operations for the same cost as 32-bit.
