The "power of virtual 86" & 286 modes was legacy compatibility. x86-64 offers the same legacy compatibility, plus you get 64-bit operations for the same cost as 32-bit. That's GREAT... what OS/software will actually address them??? Seems to me that the x86-64 is going to take more software support and optimization than the P4... I honestly don't think the mass media software market is going to pick up on it...
