They will be especially important in U.S. and China.

I'd think Latin America more so than the U.S.; but getting to a $100 F.O.B. factory handset is worth the effort; one of the issues facing TDMA carriers in their migration path is handset cost, and CDMA has been around 25% higher than GSM for comparable customer functionality.

I could almost hear the analysts cringing about the effect of lowered ASP's on QCOM's revenue stream. That is so myopic from a strategy standpoint.

I remember a long time ago learning about pricing: "if you don't do it to yourself, somebody else will do it to you."

Carriers have long followed a "give away the razor, sell the blades" strategy, but they care a lot about how much the damn razors cost.

It may be that some of Dr. IJ's new friends in Chiner are on track to produce a sub-$100 entry-level CDMA handset. I'd love to see it. (It looks like MOT has already figured out how to sell $100 handsets there, they just haven't figured out how to make 'em for that.)
