"US AIDS Treatment Costs Estimated at About $7 Billion"
Reuters Health Information Services (08/07/00)

Research published in the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes (2000;24:182-188) indicates that it cost between $6.7 billion and $7.8 billion to treat Americans with HIV in 1996, which is around $20,000 to $24,700 a person per year. Instead of preparing a "patient-based" HIV cost estimate, researchers from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality used "payer-based" data to show how funds moved from payers of care and "provider-based" data on funds collected by providers. Authors Fred Hellinger and John Fleishman note that the estimates have their limits, such as excluding funds for care provided by charities and that the rates paid by Medicaid and other groups may be lower than the actual cost of care, and they suggested that future research focus on information from patients, payers, and providers.
