My mother was of Italian and English extraction. My Italian great- grandparents settled in New York, but my grandfather came down when he was in the Army, and stayed because of all of the new construction in Washington at mid- century. My English great- great- grandparents were immigrants after the Civil War. In my mother's line they headed for Washington, first farming in Anacostia when it was still somewhat bucolic. Later, my GGGrandmother ran a boarding house several blocks from the White House. On my great- grandfather's side, they were English Catholics, so my maternal grandmother was raised Catholic, as was my mother.......
