The only good part of social security was the possibility of getting your money back. The bad part was the money wasn't set aside. It seems to me that social security could have could have at least been wholly invested in Federal securities and grown to conservatively provide what it promised rather that spent into deficit. That it quickly became a lie shows the best was not very good.
