"I'm surprised on how little discussion there has been concerning the effect booming CSM sales will have on the MSM business. The CSM boom, if I may call it that, will reflect nicely on Q's bottom line in 2002."

My impression was that this "CSM boom" was the result of 1) rapid infrastructure buildout in china and 2)1X cards being used as replacements. While CSM seeding into china allows CDMA uptake and will translate directly into increased MSM/handset sales, CSMs intended for 1x upgrades does not necessarily induce an increase in total MSM market, since all it may mean is that people buy 1x instead of 95A phones. OTOH, that ignores the potential of the replacement market generated by the 1x product cycle, which may be substantial. However, since in this case, CSM uptake does not only reflect penetration into new markets, i wouldn't trust it as an indicator of forthcoming demand for MSM/handsets. Just MHO.
