Aviron says won't launch FluMist for 2001 season

Friday July 27, 4:41 pm Eastern Time

GAITHERSBURG, Md., July 27 (Reuters) - Aviron(NasdaqNM:AVIR - news) will not be able to launch its FluMist nasal spray vaccine in time for the upcoming flu season, the pharmaceutical company's chief executive said on Friday after a U.S. regulatory panel voted against recommending approval of FluMist, citing safety concerns.

``We will not be able to launch this vaccine in time to participate in the 2001-2002 flu season,'' Aviron Chairman and Chief Executive Boyd Clarke told reporters after a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory committee voted against recommending approval for FluMist to prevent influenza because members were not convinced of the product's safety.

Clarke said making limited quantities of FluMist available had been a secondary objective for Aviron, based in Mountain View, Calif.

``Our primary objective still remains securing licensure of this vaccine in order to participate in a full launch for FluMist in 2002,'' Clarke said.
