Dear Paul:
He does not seem to know what the systems cost fully configured. I price servers. I know what the components go for. I see the purchase orders from customers to VARs. That 2 to 3 $10-15K line printers are included with $50K low end servers. That most servers in racks also include disks in external rack mounted cases. Ditto for tape drives, CD-RW burners, modem banks, terminal servers, printer servers, laser printers, decollators, bursters, label printers, scanners and telcom equipment (private lines) for remote offices. It may not be glorious or prestigeous but, it is what is included in server hardware. It also includes all the cables to connect it all.
Or is it that all he looks at stops at the external connections of the main server box (power, SCSI, fiber, network, serial, parallel, etc.). Well, I have yet to see a business that doesn't print a lot of paper. Stacks of boxes of paper every week. It was not unusual to run 10 boxes of various forms a week (at 30-50 lbs a box) at a $3-5 million a year business, say a glass manufacturer. Thus, 900 to 1800 lpm printers and the typical decollater and burster needed for the reports and such.
