SBC fined another $3.2 million
By Reuters
July 27, 2001, 1:50 p.m. PT

SBC Communications, the nation's second-largest local telephone company, said on Friday it
has paid the U.S. government another $3.2 million for failing to meet certain performance
targets set when it bought Ameritech in 1999. SBC has paid about $38.5 million since
December for failing to adequately provide rivals with access to its network. The government
has said the company has failed to allocate unbundled parts of the network, meet installation
deadlines and notify competitors when their orders were filled.

SBC said in a statement that its wholesale service to competitors continues to improve, as
reflected in lower performance measure payments. "SBC has every incentive to continue to
improve and maintain high quality service to its wholesale customers and is working hard to do
so for all of its customers-wholesale and retail," the San Antonio, Texas, company said.
