Sudan opens oil field producing 15,000 bpd

KHARTOUM, July 28 (Reuters) - Sudan has inaugurated a new oil field in war-torn southern Sudan which is producing some 15,000 barrels per day (bpd), the pro-government Akhbar al-Youm newspaper reported on Saturday.

Energy and Mining Minister Awad Ahmed al-Jaz officially opened the new Bambo field in Unity State on Thursday, it said.
The field is located 35 km (20 miles) north of Heglig, the main oil producing area, some 450 km southwest of Khartoum.

The daily said the oilfield was producing 15,000 bpd from eleven wells, adding that production was expected to rise to 30,000 in December, when 15 more wells will come on stream.
Sudan's oil industry is centred in the south where civil war has raged for 18 years.

The independent al-Ayam newspaper quoted the official spokesman of Sudan's armed forces as saying that the government had asserted complete control over all oil producing areas, often the target of rebels attacks.
