In European telecommunication, politicians are defining markets and prohibit that products in one market favor products in another market from the same company. As telecommunication grows, it spreads to other industries as well.

I could easily imagine that telecommunication services like passport, MSN, etc. would be defined as being in a market that may not be influenced by the market for operating systems. If this would happen, it would not be unthinkable that the European Commission bans import of certain Microsoft products.

For those of you who believe that Europe is a market like the U.S., I will give some examples on European laws (each of them only applies to some countries):

- Rebates in shops are not allowed.
- Credit card companies may not charge a shop a fee.
- You may not give customers a gift when the customer buys something.
- Doctors, dentists etc. may not advertise. No matter how.
- Companies may not compare their products to named competitors in advertisement.
- Movies on television may not be interrupted by commercials.
- No company may call potential customers at home by phone.
- No company may show up in person at a potential customer's home to sell something, unless they sell books.
- It is legal to download copyrighted MP3 songs from Napster etc., if it is for your personal use.
- It is illegal to use an office that does not have a Window to the outside of the building.

And some things that also apply many places are:
- On screen license agreements are not valid.
- License agreements that you are not told of when you buy a product is not valid.
- License agreements that you can only read after you open the package, are not valid.
- It is illegal to monitor employees' e-mails, unless they are told beforehand.
