You have to pass both a written and a practice test before you be licensed to drive a car. The reason is that it reduces the chances that you will endanger the community when you get behind the wheel. Other than a small group of libertarians, I suspect there is a general consensus on the wisdom of this.

To vote, you usually simply have to sign a registration card. I have never been asked for ID to register, nor to prove I'm even literate enough to read a short newspaper story and answer even very simple questions about it. Every four years, I vote to elect someone who can:

a) Order the destruction of the world in a nuclear holocaust.

b) Move the nation toward poverty with wrong-headed tax and regulation policies.

c) Further the progress of the deterioration of our creator-endowed liberties, and cheapen the ideals of the Founders on which our nation's legitimacy is based.

d) Send our children into harm's way in foreign countries for reasons that are subject to serious debate and disagreement.

In other words, that individual, as well as the Senators and representatives I vote for, can endanger the community in far greater scope and in far more ways then any unqualified driver.

WHY THEN, are we so hell-bent on failing to protect our society from the unqualified voter?
