You seem to disassociate a "community" from an individual. A community is made up of individuals, therefore the protection of each individual's right benefits the community more than any particular group's perceived need may benefit the community. If rights are abrogated, especially in the name of some "need," then all individual's rights have been weakened or violated. Thus the community would, of necessity, be diminished.
