I'd be happy to define the term "underclass."

I'm referring to the socioeconomic class of people in American society with incomes at or actually below the poverty level. This is neither a hifalutin word nor something out of "Upstairs, Downstairs."

For my own purposes, I also would expand the definition to include America's "working poor," i.e., no health insurance, often no car, kids qualify for free lunches at school, etc.

In the last election, Republicans were trying to make political hay over the fact that some servicemen and servicewomen also were members of this so-called underclass, since they qualified and, in come cases, actually received food stamps. I also have used the term "disenfranchised" to talk about people whom the American dream has left behind.

No. My actual beliefs are actually 180 degrees different from what I post.
