Intel did not earn $0.12 on operations. The earnings for any company by the rules of the SEC must use GAAP, Generally Accepted Accounting Principals. Those are defined by the Accounting Standards Executive Committee (AcSEC) of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). The SEC rules can modify them when it deems necessary. "Pro Forma" earnings are not part of the standard. By those rules, Intel made only $0.03. It gives the ability to compare two companies by the same standard. That is one of the reasons the SEC is investigating so called pro forma earnings reports by those companies engaged in that practice. The mere fact that one is 4 times the other is cause for concern.
