The community is more than the sum of individual rights, and not all conflicts can be construed in inalieanable, individual rights language. For example, suppose an isolated community in more primitive times, technologically speaking. Suppose that the one water source for the town and surrounding countryside, a lake, is owned by the richest man in town, and that he happens to be a bastard. Suppose that he uses his position to force this alternative: either pay exorbitant prices, and remain in perpetual poverty, or die of thirst. Does the community have to adhere to the terms he has imposed, or does it have a right to terminate his ownership and administer the lake for itself?

I take it that human dignity is the "theme" of morality. Human rights generally promote that, but should not be construed in such a way that they derogate from it.
