Yes, it can. I grew up in an integrated area. When my county was forced to bus, my high school had to lose blacks. There was just as much protesting as in the high schools gaining blacks, since we would lose various prominent athletes and such.

When MLK died, my mother cried for a long time, as she had after the Kennedy assassination. She was also scared: terrible rioting occurred only a few miles from our house, and there was a fear of spillover......
