The reason Americans have become so much more energy efficient is because of appliances, buildings and factories. Refrigerators, lamps, air conditioners and pulp
and paper plants have all become far more energy efficient.

An estimated 25% of all electricity used in the US is by 1000hp and larger electric motors. American Superconductor is now starting to manufacture such motors that require a fraction of the electricity.

The point: These technologies cannot happen unless there is a market that makes it financially worthwhile. The desire of people to "conserve" is immaterial in the picture. What really matters is when they purchase a refrigerator and it says, "This one will save you $200/year over that one".

While conservation may be a driving force for a tiny fraction of consumers, the markets are what forces conservation to happen. $2 a gallon gas is a GOOD thing, if what you want is conservation. And $3 a gallon gas is that much better. The government needs to have only a supporting role in this matter; the markets will take care of it if they are allowed to operate.

I think California is a great example of what happens when you interfere with the markets.
