Nice day trip. West Texas (generally everything west of I-35) has always been my favorite part of the state, mostly because of the pleasant, real people and the landscape that has been relatively untarnished by the development and resulting visual pollution of the large urban areas in the rest of the state.

In the past year I've made driving trips to Brownwood, Marble Falls and Lubbock, and each time it felt good to be in the western part of the state. Although I'm not an avid reader like you, I have Archer City and McMurtry's book empire on my list of places to visit -- I suspect there would be an interesting photo-op or two there.
