High-Speed Internet Benefits Rural Commercial Enterprise
DRAFT OTTAWA - Moving its business operations from a large city to a rural area offered many benefits for Muzmo Communications, a specialized publishing and Internet consulting business based near Meaford, Ontario. Freedom from the stress of traffic jams and the ability to operate a business in a rural environment were just two of the attractions that led Muzmo to relocate, recently, from the Greater Toronto Area.
The move also brought an unexpected surprise when the company discovered that wireline-based high-speed Internet access was not available from its new location. "Neither the phone companies or the cable operators would provide us with high-speed Internet service," says President, Murray Muzmo. "When you're located in a remote area, it is virtually impossible to get high-speed access from wireline service providers. I even tried to pay to have the fibre installed to link our office to their network."
Looking for alternatives, Muzmo discovered a new satellite-based high-speed Internet access service recently introduced by Ottawa-based C-COM Satellite Systems Inc. After carefully assessing the capabilities of the technology, Muzmo Communications chose to become the first commercial user of C-COM's service. "The satellite-based service is providing high-speed Internet access which would, otherwise, be unavailable," says Muzmo. "C-COM's satellite technology is giving us access to our customers and markets around the globe. We are also currently working closely with several organizations around the world on the establishment of XML standards. Having high-speed Internet access is critical to our business operations."
"Muzmo Communications is an example of the businesses that we have targeted for our newly deployed 2-way high-speed satellite service, Leslie Klein, President & CEO, C-COM Satellite Systems Inc. "The service gives companies such as Muzmo Communications a vital and highly reliable high-speed link to the Internet. The company can communicate with its existing customers and new markets without having to use a traditional wireline-based network." Muzmo agrees. "We've had, virtually, no problems with the service. The service speed surpasses what I was receiving from my cable-based Internet provider in Toronto."
C-COM's high-speed satellite-based Internet service is being targeted to remote and underserved residential and commercial users for mobile and fixed applications throughout North America and the Caribbean.. The company is targeting two key markets for its services: mobile and fixed 2-way subscribers. The mobile market includes trucking companies, recreational vehicles, utility vehicles, police forces, emergency vehicles, ships and other marine vehicles. The fixed wireless market consists of both urban and rural commercial and residential subscribers who do not have or many never have access to broadband DSL or cable.

Both mobile and fixed-wireless markets are expected to grow dramatically over the next two years with the number of Internet users reaching 500 million by 2003. The number of wireless data subscribers is expected to reach 11 million users. As a result of this tremendous growth, C-COM expects to sign several thousand customers over the next 12 to 18 months. Within the next three years, the company has projected it will generate close to $50 million in annual revenues.
"We're recognizing the needs of a unique market and fulfilling an unmet demand for high-speed Internet access," says Klein. "Because of their location, many of our customers have no way to gain access to high-speed Internet services."
C-COM is planning to reach as many potential customers as possible by establishing strategic partnerships with dealers and other third parties. As a result of an alliance with Hughes Network Systems, the company is delivering its iNetVu mobile Internet solution with Hughes DirectPC Internet services to thousands of mobile users through an extensive dealer network across the United States. For its 2-way fixed wireless solution, C-COM is signing dealers and installers across Canada to deploy its service to fixed-wireless customers. Once it strengthens its market position in North America, the company will be turning its sights to South American and Asian markets, especially in underdeveloped countries where wireline networks are limited and satellite technology is ideal.
"The success of C-COM's future products and growth strategies depends on our commitment to maintaining the highest and most reliable service for our customers", says Klein. "Our focus on service quality will ensure that any new service applications meet their needs, wherever they may be located."
