>> AT&T Wireless and Verizon Customer Details Exposed
Elizabeth Biddlecombe Total Telecom 28 July 2001 Customers of U.S. mobile operators Verizon and AT&T Wireless have been exposed to a hack attack, according to IDG.
An investigation has been started into a breach that meant that customer information was shared publicly in Internet chat rooms.
The security lapse appears to have affected customers located in Oklahoma and California who joined up with the operators between December and April of this year and, crucially, who ordered services over the Internet.
Details could have included credit card numbers, social security numbers and driver's license details, which would be enough to enable a full identity theft in the US, along with other personal information.
"It looks like some information may have been taken possibly from these wireless providers and also possibly from a third party that might be doing credit checks for the wireless providers," Jim Magdych, security research manager for PGP Security, part of Network Associates, told The Industry Standard .
Both operators said they were investigating the situation and that they took security issues very seriously as a whole. <<
