Science is not something you can turn on or off at will. What happens when we use up all the oil and science has not come up with a viable alternative?

The alternatives are not viable because oil is still much cheaper. They become viable as oil becomes scarcer and more expensive. Those closest to viability will attract a lot of research and development if oil prices go up to more then 2 or 3 times their current level.
