If, as you say, Alaskan oil is shipped to Japan for logistical reasons, then will this not be in fact truer for oil drilled from the Artic wildlife preserve? What is then the true purpose of drilling there if this oil is unlikely to reduce American dependence on Middle East oil? Even if the oil does not directly go to the US adding it to the supply on the market lowers the price for the US and lowers the ability of OPEC to manipulate prices to their advantage. Tim
