GEORGE READ:
Signer of the Declaration of Independence, signer of the constitution, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Delaware. Known as “the Father of Delaware,” G. Read wrote “the first edition of her laws” and the Constitution of the state of Delaware. The requirements , stated in the state’s Constitution, necessary for holding office include:
‘ DELAWARE 1776. Article XXII. Every person who shall be chosen a member of either house, or appointed to any office or place of trust….shall…make and subscribe the following declaration, to wit: “I_____, do profess faith in God the Father, and in Jesus Christ His only Son, and in the Holy Ghost, one God, blessed for evermore; and I do acknowledge the holy scriptures of the Old and New Testament to be given by divine inspiration. :”
JOHN DICKINSON:
Signer of the US Constitution, a member of the Continental Congress . Was best remembered as “The Penman of the Revolution”
Here is an excerpt from his “Letter from a farmer in Pennsylvania”
But while Divine Providence, that gave me existence in a land of freedom, permits my head to think, my lips to speak, and my hands to move, I shall so highly and gratefully value the blessings received as to take care that my silence and inactivity shall not give my implied assent to my act., degrading my brethren and myself from the birthright, wherewith heaven itself, “hath made us free”. .
